Discount codes are a great way of rewarding your repeat customers, to create buzz for occasions like a product launch, or special events that you're attending or celebrating.
A Discount Code is a type of promotion where the buyer uses a code at checkout to apply the discount to the order. A Sale is a discount that automatically applies to the cart when the discount conditions are met. Check out our FAQ about setting up a Promotional Sale for more info.
- When using codes for the first time, test that they are working how you expect by adding items to the cart and checking the prices.
- Keep in mind that if a Discount Code and a Sale is applied to an item, both discounts will be applied to the price.
- Only one code per Store can be applied per Order.
Creating a discount code
On your product page, you will see a tab marked "Promotions." Click the tab and find the box on the right side that says "Create Promotion."
The first box is where you will set the Type, date range, and limits for the code. Be sure to select 'Discount Code' rather than 'Sale'.
Discount promotions can have a maximum number of uses, both overall and per-user. The default limits are one use per buyer, but an unlimited number of uses overall.
You do not need to specify an end date for your promotion, but we recommend it.
The next box allows you to choose parameters for your promotion, including $ or %, Minimum & Maximum units, and a short description.
The Minimum # is helpful when creating Multi-Save Promotions, such as "Buy 2, Save 25%".
The Maximum can be used to limit the number of items the discount is applied to per order. For example, if you are offering 25% off with a Maximum of 10 units, and a customer purchases 11 units, the discount will only apply to ten.
The last box allows you to choose which products will be included in the sale. Just check off the boxes to the left of the items you want to include. Be sure to click SAVE when you're finished.
When you click 'Save' a code will be created for you, but you can change it by editing the text box and clicking 'Update'. Codes must be 8-20 characters long.
Next, you should see the 'Code details', a confirmation that your discount has been created.
After you have created a discount, you can see it in your promotions tab. Options to edit and delete are on the right side.
You can edit the promotion to 'enable' or 'disable' it.
Sharing the code
Append the code to a product URL to make it easier to share in an email or on social media. Just add ?dc=YourDiscountCode to your product or store link. e.g.
Buyers can also add it to their shopping cart.
